Top aide: Trump will reach out to Sanders supporters

Donald Trump's campaign manager says that the Republican presidential front-runner is planning to reach out to supporters of Democratic hopeful Bernie Sanders, seeking common ground among those backing an outsider candidate.

"You have two candidates in Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders which have reignited a group of people who have been disenfranchised and disappointed with the way Washington, D.C., and career politicians have run the country," Corey Lewandowski told CNN.

"Bernie Sanders has large crowds - not as large as Mr. Trump's, but large crowds - and so there is a level of excitement there for people about his messaging and we will bring those people in."

Trump, who has never before held political office, and the Vermont senator, a Democratic socialist, have sparked enthusiasm among voters disenchanted with the political system.

The two candidates have some similarities in that they both are staunchly opposed to international trade agreements and have vowed to shut down jobs being shipped overseas.

The front-runner may also feel emboldened by some Sanders supporters' animosity towards Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. Actress Susan Sarandon, a Sanders surrogate, said last month that she didn't know if she'd vote for Clinton over Trump in a general election.

Still, as CNN noted, a Washington Post/ABC News poll found last month that 86 percent of Sanders supporters view Trump unfavorably.
