If presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump doesn’t release his tax returns, he’s disqualified for the presidency — that is, according to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

“It is disqualifying for a modern-day presidential nominee to refuse to release tax returns to the voters, especially one who has not been subject to public scrutiny in either military or public service,” the 2012 Republican nominee wrote in a Facebook post Wednesday afternoon.

Romney said tax returns offer voters “sole confirmation of the veracity of a candidate’s representations regarding charities, priorities, wealth, tax conformance, and conflicts of interest.” In addition, he said releasing tax returns rules out any inappropriate financial decisions, such as associations with foreign entities or criminal organizations, though he said such a development is “not a likely circumstance.”

From there, the former governor predicted Trump has a “bombshell of unusual size” hidden within his tax returns, knocking the billionaire businessman’s claim that he cannot release the information because of the audits he’s been subjected to.

“There is nothing that prevents releasing tax returns that are being audited. Further, he could release returns for the years immediately prior to the years under audit,” Romney wrote.

“There is only one logical explanation for Mr. Trump’s refusal to release his returns: there is a bombshell in them,” he continued. “Given Mr. Trump’s equanimity with other flaws in his history, we can only assume it’s a bombshell of unusual size.”
